European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
