Much like bad weather hit the northwest the prior day, Manchester City swept United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Consecutive Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline marked consecutive WSL defeats for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since last May, placing them a sizable gap off the top team with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s ability to balance league and European soccer with a limited team has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared tired from start to finish, the memorable win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had sought to freshen things up with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought energy, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

The primary change came from the United manager at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to change the course of the contest. Former Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to produce a single shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their lead when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any opponent who finished above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a strong situation after nine games.
