The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
